Full-Range Production

MTI's Contract Services is much more than just a "job shop." Our equipment allows you to experience the range and quality of friction welding first-hand - whether you use our 450-ton welder, the largest contract services welder in the U.S., or our innovative Friction Stir Welding equipment that can produce a 55-foot weld, one of the largest in the world.

MTI is a unique single-source solution for any business with friction welding requirements.

Welding Processes

As a world leader in the design, manufacture and installation of friction welding machines, MTI is able to work with customers to develop a welding process specific to their needs. Our world-class friction welding contract services utilize machines that range from 6- to 450-ton weld force and provide the following welding applications:

  • Direct Drive Friction
  • Inertia Friction
  • Linear Friction
  • Friction Stir Welding
  • Resistance Welding - Spot, seam, projection butt and flash/butt

Any Size, Any Volume

MTI can accommodate orders of any size or quantity - a range broader than any other friction welding contract shop in the U.S.

  • Material sizes range from .250-inch to 6-inch diameter solid or 43 in2 tubular steel.
  • Production lot quantities vary from prototype quantities (less than 5 pieces) up to more than 300,000 pieces per year.

Unique Material Combinations

MTI has developed the component design and welding conditions for a wide range of high-amperage electrical contacts comprised of a W/Cu (Tungsten/Copper) tip friction welded to a high-conductivity Cu (Copper) body. Other part materials previously considered unachievable are commonly welded by MTI:

  • Aluminum to stainless steel
  • Aluminum to titanium
  • Carbon steel to monel
  • Steel to aluminum-bronze
  • Steel to copper
  • Titanium to copper
  • Titanium-aluminide to inconel

Flexible Lead-times

As a single-source operation, MTI offers unparalleled flexibility and customer support. Depending on whether or not jobs require MTI to provide post-weld processing or extensive tooling, deliveries are typically made 2 to 4 weeks from receipt of order and material.

Pre- and Post-Weld Processing

Utilizing MTI's Pre- and Post-Welding Processing services reduces costs and delivery times by eliminating vendor coordination, shipping and transit time.

  • Cutting
  • Machining
  • Heat-treat (three in-house furnaces)
  • Weld Flash Removal
  • Finish Machining
  • Turning, Milling and Grinding
  • Tooling
