MTI’s Pre-Weld Processing Services
MTI is your one-stop shop for welded components, helping you achieve project goals from the earliest pre-welding stages to final production.
Successful friction welding begins even before welding starts. Our Contract Manufacturing services support the full pre-weld stage by helping you evaluate base metals, part geometry, material condition, and production goals.
Here are some of our pre-welding processing services that your project can benefit from:
Weld Prep Tailored By Customer Requirements and Project Scope
The most important part of any manufacturing project is identifying your needs before the pre-welding process begins.Â
No project is the same. Small production runs, high-volume manufacturing, and even specialized welded components each have distinct project goals and overall requirements.Â
At MTI, we customize each weld-prep solution to your application. This client-driven approach allows us to adapt the pre-weld process to your goals rather than forcing your project into a standard workflow.
Pre-Welding Supply Chain Management
MTI manages resources for your project through our supply chain management services, in which our team provides its expertise:
- Review certifications and material requirements to enable a more controlled, traceable manufacturing process.
- Confirm if your industrial standards are met by your surface material, base metal, and the required materials.
- Ensures the right components (materials and parts) for your intended friction welding application.
- Anticipates and identifies factors that could impact the overall weld preparation process, including material condition, surface requirements, and incoming part quality.
By managing these details during the pre-weld stage, MTI helps customers enter production with the right materials in place and ready for welding.
Metallurgy Services for Metal and Base Material Preparation
MTI’s metallurgy services evaluate your material, base metal, and joint requirements before welding begins:
- The engineer advises you on how your metal will perform during friction welding.
- MTI uses in-house equipment and pre-production welding tests to identify defects in parts, materials, and welds that may be invisible to the naked eye.
- Our Process Engineers help ensure the joint strength meets your requirements before moving into full production.
For customers evaluating new materials, MTI’s metallurgy services can confirm whether the selected base metal or dissimilar metal.
Metallurgy Services for Metal and Base Material Preparation
MTI’s metallurgy services evaluate your material, base metal, and joint requirements before welding begins:
- The chief advises you on how your metal will perform during friction welding.
- MTI uses in-house equipment and pre-production welding tests to identify defects in parts, materials, and welds that may be invisible to the naked eye.
- Our Process Engineers work alongside in-house metallurgists to help ensure the joint strength meets your requirements before moving into full production.
For customers evaluating new materials, MTI’s metallurgy services can confirm whether the selected base metal or dissimilar metal.
Tooling Services & Heat Treatment
Our tooling services ensure every part is properly prepared, supported, and aligned before it reaches our friction welders. MTI’s tooling varies in shapes and sizes to support different weld prep needs. But what if your part does not fit our existing tooling? Worry not. Part of our tooling services is designing new tooling for your project.
If preheating is required, MTI can help assess appropriate preheat methods, whether heat is applied through induction or another controlled method, and what minimum preheat may be needed for the application.
By managing tooling in-house, we help you streamline weld preparation without sending parts, fixtures, or related accessories to outside suppliers.
CNC Machining Services for Surface Material Readiness
For applications involving tight tolerances, sensitive base metals, or complex component designs, CNC machining supports comprehensive weld preparation.
MTI has three Hurco machines (including a 5-axis mill and a live-tooling lathe) and an Okuma lathe available for precise cutting, grinding, and machining, as well as part customization.
Meeting Your Industrial Welding Standards
At MTI, safety and quality are built into every pre-welding process, every part we weld, and every machine we build. Our teams apply the precision, process control, and technical expertise needed to meet the most demanding industrial standards.

Not Seeing Your Combination Of Materials?
That doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Many of our material combinations are also proprietary. That’s why several of our customers use MTI’s in-house metallurgy lab, which will test your materials for strength and durability to see if friction welding is the right process for you.
Please note Weld strength is dependent on materials & geometry.

Let’s talk about the specifics of your project:
Post-Welding
Processing Services
Once your part comes off our friction welding machine, MTI’s work does not stop there. Through our Contract Manufacturing Services, you gain access to comprehensive post-weld processing.
From flash removal and grinding to machining, inspection, and final surface preparation, our end-to-end approach reduces reliance on outside vendors, streamlines your timeline, and gives you greater confidence in every finished part.
Proven Pre-Welding and Welding Expertise
“We had a great experience with the MTI team. Their experience with piston welding allowed us to efficiently incorporate the welded joint in our design. They were very responsive to our questions and diligently kept us informed of their progress throughout the project. We are confident that we’ve found a good partner to support our future production needs in this area.”
