Friction Stir Welders

LS Series Friction Stir Welder

Description

MTI’s LS Series is the most versatile Friction Stir Welding solution in our portfolio, engineered for exceptional flexibility across aluminum, copper, and steel applications. Its  3-axis weld capability with optional A/B tilt angle and modular base allow manufacturers to scale the machine footprint to their production needs. The optional upper and lower weld head configuration delivers high throughput and simultaneous welding capability. As the preferred solution for joining wide aluminum extrusions and large, structural panel assemblies used in shipbuilding, high-speed rail, and aerospace, the LS Series offers unmatched performance for long, continuous welds. It is also ideally suited for thermal management components, such as cooling plates, electronic enclosures, and thermal panels, and can be configured for dual loading to minimize cycle time.

MTI’s LS Series is also designed for high downforces required in the growing market for Friction Stir Welding of steel. This includes the welding of steel components used in nuclear, automotive, aerospace, and defense applications, where stringent quality requirements demand a repeatable, robust, and accurate solid-state joining process with minimal distortion.

All MTI FSW machines come standard with Stirtec’s STIRlytics® control platform, which combines closed loop force and position control with real-time process monitoring to ensure ISO 25239compliant weld quality at high production speeds. Built on SIEMENS Sinumerik ONE CNC and S7 PLC hardware, STIRlytics® captures full weld traceability data, supports remote diagnostics and updates, and provides Industry 4.0 ready connectivity. This advanced digital control system minimizes downtime, strengthens process repeatability, and delivers the high level of consistency manufacturers expect from MTI’s FSW solutions. Together with Stirtec, MTI also provides customer-specific fixturing and pin tool design and manufacturing to drive superior process capability and weld quality for your application.
