LOW FORCE FRICTION WELDING FROM MTI
The newest addition to MTI’s technology offerings, Low Force, is the optimised version of traditional friction welding. Like traditional friction welding, Low Force is a solid state welding process. Low Force uses an external energy source to raise the interface temperature of the parts being welded, reducing the process forces required to make a weld.
Low Force builds upon the foundation of our legacy Direct Drive friction welding process with the addition of bringing on external heat. This makes Low Force friction welding an ideal process to optimise classic and new applications with benefits such as smoother flash formation and low upset while enabling potential product design enhancements. In-machine heat treating may also expand benefits for welding dissimilar metals.
HOW DOES LOW FORCE WORK?
Within the solid-state continuum, Low Force falls between diffusion bonding and traditional friction welding. This is because Low Force is a process that utilises a combination of pre-heat, motion, and force.

SEE LOW FORCE IN HIGH-RES
Offered in both Rotary and Linear, Low Force can optimise virtually any application.
Smooth Flash & Low Upset
The flash is formed as a smooth bulge instead of a pair of curls as with traditional friction welding.
Expanded Capabilities
Low Force can accommodate a larger range of parts, thinner tube walls, & unique geometries.
In-machine Heat Treat
For hardenable steels, Low Force machines can deliver post-weld heat treatment with no extra steps.
