Friction Welding Applications for the Military
Government agencies in the United States and abroad rely on MTI as their friction welding technology source. MTI’s continued research into the stored energy approach to friction welding, first pioneered by Caterpillar Tractor, Inc. and AMF, resulted in the first military standards written around the inertia welding process (MIL-STD-1252).
The advantages of this process such as no smoke, fumes or gases, or few sparks produced, and the fact that the process is machine-controlled, make it suitable for use in potentially explosive or hazardous environments. The machine can be fully automated so the operator can be safely located out of harm’s way. MTI’s machines and contract welding services have been used in making military defense, aircraft, aerospace and ground transportation components.
