Resistance Welding
MTI acquired British Federal, the leading name in Resistance Welding, to create a worldwide network for the design, manufacture, installation and service of Resistance Welding machines. We set the highest measures of quality in Resistance Welding with exceptional technology, powerhouse machines, the best customer response, and a combined 145 years of welding and engineering experience and involvement in leading edge innovation.
Process Overview
Resistance Welding is a solid-state welding process that uses electrical resistance and mechanical pressure to form the weld. Transformers pass current through an electrode into the work pieces until the faying surfaces are heated to an almost molten state. Then the current is stopped and pressure is applied, forging the materials together to form a weld.
Process parameters are pressure, time and current. Five methods of Resistance Welding are spot, seam, projection, butt and flash/butt.
Resistance Welding is used to join similar and dissimilar metals, primarily steel, stainless steel, titanium, and aluminum.
MTI's Resistance Welding machines are commonplace throughout many sectors of manufacturing: agriculture, automotive (brake shoes, fuel tanks and "body in white" parts), aviation (duct systems), defense and electronics are a few. Nut welding and bolt welding, and folding and seam welding drums - used to contain oil products (including food processing oil) - are just some of our strengths.
Advantages & Benefits of Resistance Welding
- A low-cost, mass production application that provides excellent welds
- Repeatable and easily automated
- Versatile
- A clean process, both around the weld area and environmentally
- Introduces no foreign material into the weld
- Quality of weld is independent of operator skill
MTI's Resistance Welders
MTI has thousands of Resistance Welding machines in operation around the world, from Russia to Australia, because our machines are robust, reliable and built to last. We are still servicing machines more than 40 years old.
We design and manufacture a range of standard models, and are renowned for our brake shoe, drum and aircraft specification Resistance Welding machines. We also work with clients to produce the finest custom models, providing turnkey services from design to system integration.
Resistance Welding machine features include:
- Automation
- Medium frequency weld controls
- Manufacturing cell integration (including transportation, bar coding, quality control, part destruction)
- Custom design machine diagnostics and maintenance schedule for full preventive maintenance
